How a print is priced

Every quote you receive from us comes from concrete, measurable ingredients — never guesswork. On this page you can see exactly what goes into the price, line by line.

What goes into your quote

Ask any 3D printing service and you will find the same ingredients behind the final cost. Here are ours, out in the open:

Material

The object's weight as calculated by the slicer, times the filament price per kilo — plus a small margin for supports and material that ends up wasted. PLA is the most affordable; PETG, TPU and fiber-reinforced filaments cost more.

Machine time

Prints run for hours and the printer works meanwhile: electricity, wear on nozzles and build plates, lubricants, maintenance. Power alone can be a few cents per hour, but wear and servicing are a real cost — so we charge a machine-hour rate.

Hands-on work & preparation

The part that never shows up in a photo: modelling and slicing, machine setup, monitoring, support removal, quality checks, packaging and talking with you. Often the largest share of the price — a print that runs for many hours can take hours of real work around it.

Failure allowance

No print is guaranteed: power cuts, parts detaching mid-print, detail failures. Especially on long or delicate prints we include a small contingency — if everything goes well, you never feel it.

Finishing

What happens after: support removal, sanding, gluing parts, painting or polishing where needed. A piece with demanding finishing clearly costs more than one delivered “straight off the bed”.

Design

If you don't have a ready model, or want it resized and tweaked in colour and detail, the modelling time counts too. Simple tweaks take minutes; a design from scratch takes more.

Settings that change the price

Two pieces of the same size and material can cost differently. These are the settings that make the difference:

01

Layer height

Thinner layers give a smoother surface but nearly double the time. Where fine detail doesn't matter, thicker layers keep the price down.

02

Infill density

The inside you never see still weighs: dense infill means more material and more time. Decorative pieces need little; functional parts need more.

03

Supports

Overhangs and floating surfaces need support structures: extra material that gets discarded, plus extra finishing afterwards.

04

Colours & filament changes

Every extra colour brings nozzle cleaning and filament lost on each change — multicolour pieces cost more.

05

Material

PLA, PETG, TPU or reinforced filaments: different prices, speeds and handling. The material is chosen for the use case — and it shows in the quote.

A worked example

An indicative calculation for a small PLA decorative piece — about 60 grams of filament and a 3-hour print. Every quote is built in exactly the same way; the final price is always confirmed per order.

Cost itemIndicativeWhat it covers
Material (60 g PLA)≈ €1.20Typical filament price ~€20/kg — more for specialty materials.
Machine time (3 h)≈ €1.50Electricity, wear and maintenance of the printer.
Hands-on work (~40 min)≈ €4.00Slicing, setup, removal, quality check, packing.
Failure allowance≈ €0.60For the small chance the print has to be re-run.
Sustainability margin≈ 30%Keeps the workshop open next year, too.
Indicative total≈ €9–10Before any shipping. The final price is confirmed with your quote.

The numbers above are indicative (typical industry magnitudes) and are not an offer on their own — every real quote, however, is built in exactly this way. Notice the indicative total lands at €9–10: below the €10 order minimum, all that preparation and finishing wouldn't be covered — which is exactly why orders start at €10.

Pricing questions we get

Why isn't the price just “grams × rate”?

Because the filament is usually the cheapest part: a piece worth €1.50 of PLA can take half an hour or more of slicing, setup and finishing. If we charged only for material, the work and know-how would be free — and that doesn't add up in the long run.

Why do two similar-sized pieces differ in price?

Size isn't everything: weight, infill, supports, number of colours and layer height all change the cost of two visually similar pieces. If something looks odd, ask — we'll tell you exactly where they differ and why.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes — every order has a €10 minimum, because every order starts the same way: file preparation, machine setup, quality check and packing. But it isn't money wasted: if your item is small, several copies of it fit on the same print bed — e.g. 4 copies of a 10-gram piece print together, so the €10 minimum turns into 4 items in your hands.

Can I make my order cheaper?

Yes, usually: choose thicker layers when fine detail doesn't matter, lower infill for decorative pieces, fewer colours, or order several pieces at once so the setup cost is shared. We will always suggest the cheapest material that still fits the use.
